Bears Win Covid Cup After Weekend Split with Mosinee

The Bears split a weekend series with the Mosinee Papermakers, but took home the "Covid Cup".
Mosinee, WI - The Fond du Lac Bears and Mosinee Papermakers engaged in a two-game weekend series in Mosinee this past weekend, with the newly created Covid Cup on the line. The Covid Cup was a two-game, total goal series. After each team won a game over the weekend by one goal, the series was decided by a post-game overtime then shootout Saturday, which the Beras won.
Friday (W 5-4) @ Mosinee
Ryan Smet led the charge with a three-point night in the Bears victory. The game was a back-and-forth affair, with the score being tied 1-1 after one, and 3-3 after two. The Bears tied the game with 6:58 remaining on Smet's first tally of the game. Jordan Foster scored the go-ahead goal 1:31 later to put the Bears in the lead for good. Randy Willis stopped 39 shots in the winning effort.
Saturday (L 6-5) @ Mosinee
Saturday's game was another good back-and-forth affair. Terry Kalata scored 5:25 into the first, but the Papermakers pushed back with three first-period markers to enter the intermission up 3-1. The Bears would eventually tie the game on goals from Ryan Sabel and Malachi Bucholz in the first half of the second period. But the Papermakers kept battling and scored two goals in a 39-second span to reclaim a two-goal lead. The teams traded a few more goals back and forth, but the Bears fell one shy in the 6-5 loss. With the team's tied in total goals, the two teams played an exhibition overtime period, followed by a shootout for the right to the Covid Cup trophy. The Bears won in the eighth round of the shootout.
